A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 struck Herat Province on October 7, 2023, causing the loss of 2,000 lives and leaving thousands more injured. The earthquake hit an area 40km northwest of Herat, affecting around 3,000 families (approximately 10,000 individuals) and 12 villages near the city.
OHW’s team, based in Herat, and Badghis have traveled to the affected areas to provide emergency support and assess the needs of the earthquake-affected population. We are coordinating and collaborating with other INGOs to explore opportunities for joint response efforts. The earthquake caused a lot of damage, leaving many families without shelter, injured, and very shocked. These affected populations urgently need shelter, food, clean water, medical care, and emotional support.
OHW has been working in Herat for over 12 years. Our teams have planned to distribute 500 emergency NFI kits to earthquake-affected people who are living without any shelter, but still, it’s not healing the current needs of the affected people. As winter approaches, OHW is appealing to national and international actors to help us support the most vulnerable by providing heaters, fuel, blankets, clothes, hygiene, water storage packages, food items, and health services. Meanwhile, OHW aims to visit affected families to support their mental health.
