Project Overview
From 1st June-2022, DANIDA Hum Project through a sub-award agreement between OHW and Save the Children works in Kunar province Dangam and Nari Districts. This project contains two basic components EiE and Child Protection. This project means to provide quality education and child protection support to promote the safety and well-being of crisis-affected and marginalized girls, boys, their families, and communities in these two districts of Kunar.
Under this project 100 CBE classes have been established in Dangam and Nari Districts where 3341 students are actively busy in their learning. Each class is taught by a well-qualified teacher; 81 male and 19 female teachers are part of the teaching panel. These classes are supervised on a regular basis by community-based community mobilizers (10 Male 5 Female 5) and regular education officers (2 Male 1 Female 1) and trainers (2 Male 1 Female 1) in order to make sure quality teaching/learning. In addition to this, CEC Shuras of 300 members have been established who have been trained to support educational-related activities in their respective villages. Each class has 3 members in the CEC format who are active enough and on a timely basis OHW and CBE classes receive support from their side.
In the child protection component, 10 CFS/GFS have been established in both districts where affected children are provided with essential equipment and psychosocial support. Alongside, CBCPN (Community-Based Child Protection Networks) have been formed and regular meetings are conducted with them in terms of children support. Training and quarterly based meetings with children, children’s parents, and community members are held in order to aware children, parents, and the community about children basic rights and their role being children’s subordinates.
Currently, the DANIDA project is in its second year and everything is going smoothly with their project activities. Though due to the ban on female engagement in NGOs, activities are somehow affected in providing relevant support to female communities are a bit challenging, but not that much which should overtly underline the project outcomes.
Project Outcome
“The initial project kick-off and coordination meeting conducted at the national and provincial level with the sectorial department in the 2nd quarter of 2022.
District-level coordination meetings were carried out with the education department, local government, community elders, and parents in the 2nd quarter of 2022 in Kunar province. Through these meetings, the participants were sensitized to assist in enrolling out-of-school children in community base schools.
OHW in close coordination with the provincial education department has selected Narai, and Dangam districts in Kunar. These districts were selected as per provincial education department service mapping based on a high number of out-of-school children.
In 2023 following activities have were successfully carried:
- Community level back to school campaignss carried out for community elders, parents, caregivers, school management council, and religious leaders in order to be be mobilized and sensitized to assist in the enrolment of out-of-school children in community base education classes. The campaign was conducted in March in targeted districts in Kunar province. 300 male members meaningfully participated that disseminated key messages across the targeted districts.
- Regular field visits conducted by the MEAL department, program staff, district education department, community education council and parents to ensure quality and conducive learning process, and availability of the learning materials and facilities at CBE classes have been successfully carried. These visits were planned as per the staff monthly project implementation plan. Each community mobilizer was assigned to visit at least 10 CBE classes once in a week. They provided technical and administrative support to the CBE teachers, ensuring a quality and conducive learning environment, and child safeguarding. In addition, facilitated parents and CEC meetings, resolve community conflicts and assist in the distribution of learning material.
- OHW has conducted an assessment of WASH facilities, and CBE renovation in May, and will start rehabilitation and construction of CBE classes and Latrines. For implementing, SIP an official letter was needed from PED which has been received and the Engineering team will start their assessment soon.
- 12 days inclusive education training including pedagogy, SEL, CP, CGS, PFA, SIR conducted in May for 7 (5 male 2 Female). As per pre and post-test evaluation, 54% of improvement noted in participants knowledge, skills, and behavior. This has ensured conducive and child friendly learning environment and boosted students learning outcome.
- Three Teacher learning circle (TLC) and support session for teachers conducted in Feb, March May months for minimum of 3 hours. The CBE teachers exchanged their lesson learn, experience which have boosted in their learning and improved behavior. The TLC meeting conducted at the nearby community to a cluster of 10 CBE teachers which were facilitated by Education trainers and provided refreshment and stationery.
- New Staff for the CP team was recruited successfully in the month of April-May. 2 CP officers(1 male and 1 female), and 2 Social workers (1 Male and 1 Female) were onboard through a transparent and merit basis open competition.
Due to ban on female engagement, CP activities were on hold till April. From April onward, the activities are going normally and till this point following activities have been completed successfully. - CP team conducted 30 community dialogue sessions with key community members on child protection issues, totally 300 (150M & 150F) community members engaged in these sessions and they addressed child issues at community level.
- CP team held 30 quarterly meetings with CBCPNs members to address child protection issues and to find solutions.
3.CP team conducted 20 awareness sessions on MHPSS aimed to protect and promote psychosocial well-being, prevent mental health disorders and treat such disorders when they occur. Reached the awareness to 500 community members 250M and 250F.
4.CP team held 30 quarterly meetings with Children Groups in order to promote their meaningful participation in home, school, and at community. - 10 CFS/GFS resumed their activities From 1st of May and going normally. CFS are Child Friendly Spaces where Boys are provided psychosocial support while GFS are Girls Friendly Spaces where Girls are provided the same support. These CFS/GFS were well equipped with different PSS materials in the month of May. “
